By now we have all head the phrase "Vibe Coding". It is an unfortunate, and somewhat derogatory, term for the practice of using AI agents to write code. In this article I want to speak about "Vibe Testing" - but I will call it "Agentic Testing" to differentiate it from the casual feel of "Vibe Coding". In reality, serious engineers using AI agents with full control - asking them to do specific tasks, with proper conditions specified for considering the output as acceptable. Similarly, in agentic testing, we should specify exact test cases with success conditions and testing steps clearly specified (just like we would do, when giving a test plan to human testers).
One area where agentic testing often fails is email flows. In order to test features like password-reset, user sign up, magic-links, OTPs, workflow notifications, and activity notifications, a readable email inbox is required. The inbox should be accessible via API - so that the agents can read the emails and verify their content and attachments. AI Agents are great at clicking buttons around the application's UI and running through actual agent flows (especially now with advanced models like GPT 5.6 Sol and GPT 6 Astra).
But when creating a new user, how will the agent
- Receive the auto-generated password?
- Verify that the email contains the right images and html?
- Verify that the links in the email work?

Once the plan is clear, the agent still needs a reliable inbox loop. Almost every password-reset, signup, magic-link, or OTP test follows the same shape: allocate a unique address, drive the product UI until the app sends mail, wait for that message through an API (ideally filtered by subject or sender), read the body to extract a link or code, continue the flow in the browser, then discard the inbox so the next run starts clean. If any step in that loop is missing, agentic testing collapses into vibe-testing again—someone opens Gmail by hand, the suite mocks “email sent” and proves nothing about delivery, or a local catcher works on a laptop and vanishes the moment the job runs in CI. The tools above differ in packaging, but the ones that help agents are the ones that expose this loop as an API, not as a manual mailbox.
How to choose
You do not need five vendors. You need a clear match to how your agents (and CI) actually run. Ask a few practical questions: Do you need a real MX address that your production mailer can deliver to, or is an SMTP sandbox enough for staging? Does the tool expose a wait-and-fetch API so an agent can poll for subject/sender and parse HTML, or is it mainly a human UI? Do you also need SMS, or is email-only fine? Will tests run only on a developer laptop, or must the same flow work in GitHub Actions / CI? And do you care about team keys, pricing currency, or local/open-source first?
Mailosaur is the broad QA platform (email + SMS). Mailtrap is strongest when you want to trap outbound mail in staging. Tigrmail and InboxRhino sit closer to disposable receive-inboxes for e2e. Mailpit is free and excellent locally, but weaker when the pipeline needs real delivery. Pick on architecture and API shape first; brand second.
Closing
Vibe coding can ship an auth screen in an afternoon. Agentic testing only earns the name when the email path is specified the same way: exact steps, hard success conditions, and an inbox the agent can read through an API. Without that loop, signup, password-reset, magic-links, and OTPs stay in the gap between “the UI looked fine” and “we never proved the message arrived.”
Build with agents if you want. Test the inbox path on purpose—once as a written plan, then locked into CI. If you want a receive-only inbox with wait-for-message and a visual mailbox for the cases humans still need to eyeball, start at InboxRhino and the quickstart.
